Product Safety Specialist

Perform corporate, customer and third-party quality and product safety audits and ensure compliance. 

Day-to-Day Role:

  • Follow and commit to meet Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for safety, quality, production, efficiency, and service requirements
  • Follow practices and processes intended to provide safe products that comply with appropriate laws and regulations, meet the company quality standards
  • Follow and commit to safety and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)
  • Coordinate all local aspects of auditing, reporting, recording and verification of corrective actions
  • Prioritize audit engagements and formulate project and action plan
  • Apply audit methodologies, tools and techniques to produce documentation in a clear and concise format
  • Identify and document deficiencies and assessments based upon analysis of the evidence prepared. Develop initial recommendations to correct 
  • Discuss audit results and appropriate action plans with appropriate parties
  • Facilitate and track corrective actions
  • Communicate and train on product safety policies and requirements
  • Communicate and collaborate with corporate Quality, customers and third-party agencies as needed 
  • Analyze data, recognize trends, and propose solutions to quality issues  
  • Recommend continuous improvement plans where efficiency, quality, safety, or service can be improved 
  • May perform product testing as needed

Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal Product Safety Specialist candidate must possess all of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in quality, product safety, audit, or related field and one (1) year of related experience, OR
  • Associate degree with an emphasis in quality, product safety, audit, or related field and three (3) years of related experience, OR 
  • High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of related experience in quality, product safety or audit
  • Ability to identify issues, compare and analyze data, and investigate discrepancies
  • Ability to successfully prioritize, and organize projects, deadlines, and tasks with little supervision
  • Ability to establish project plans, regularly monitor and track progress on work projects, and communicate with project partners
  • Ability to gather facts, conduct interviews, and interpret and apply rules, regulations and policies with sound judgment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work collaboratively with teams across the location and company, as well as externally.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with individuals, groups, or work teams
  • Ability to learn and understand statistical and quality methodologies including but not limited to Statistical Process Control (SPC), Statistical Quality Control (SQC), 5S, 8D, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (R&R), and Design of Experiments (DOE) 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including the ability to create reports, documents, presentations and spreadsheets in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
  • Experience using ERP or Quality Management System
  • Demonstration of minimum proficiency with the English language in order to ensure effective new hire training and on-going communications about safety and quality issues

Product Safety Specialist Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience using SAP 
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with British Retail Consortium (BRC) or similar quality / product safety certification requirements
