Day-to-Day Role:

Responsible for managing the development, planning and implementation of programs, procedures, engineering projects and capital projects that support the successful operation of the facility. Manages and directs the activities of the facilities maintenance, machine shop, and engineering services, including contractors. Coordinates closely with Corporate Project Engineers on major engineering issues.

Emphasis is placed on performance improvements through Dart’s Operational Excellence process, as well as leading problem solving and process optimization efforts across the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Directs, coordinates and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration and completion of engineering projects.
  2. Plans and formulates engineering program and organizes staff according to requirements.
  3. Collaborates with production and staff personnel in investigating, analyzing and planning action for correction of production problems that involve engineering considerations.
  4. Manages facility maintenance / machine shop / engineering service staff including contractors; monitor the service response time, delivery requirements and PM compliance on all facilities equipment.
  5. Ensures preventative and predictive maintenance programs are developed / established and functioning efficiently to support operation requirements.
  6. Directs the planning, development and implementation of new methods and procedure changes designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs and effect greater utilization of labor and equipment.
  7. Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specifications and operating or production problems.
  8. Writes capital projects supplying all supporting data as required.
  9. Maintains a trained staff with the ability to resolve facility issues across the operation.
  10. Maintains documented knowledge of facility infrastructure’s capabilities and restraints with supporting structured documents and prints.
  11. Facilitate, lead, and drive process and performance improvement efforts at the facilities.
  12. Provide the structure, processes and tools to support a variety of improvement efforts.
  13. Facilitate advanced problem solving and analysis of specific improvement opportunities leading to the implementation of effective sustainable solutions.
  14. Assist with the development and execution of improvement strategies that are aligned with business objectives.
  15. Promote the use of data and metrics for identifying improvement opportunities; apply data and metrics to problem solving and process improvement activities.
  16. Assist and support launching the Operational Excellence framework for Continuous Improvement within business processes and manufacturing.

    Provide training and employee development in areas such as process improvement, problem solving, and root cause analysis.
  18. Manages and evaluates safety / quality / service / productivity / cost performance of staff by coaching employees, conducting performance appraisals, administering discipline, and providing training and development.
  19. Analyzes and recommends staffing requirements, recommends qualifications and individuals for hire, assigns and directs work, ensures proper safety equipment is worn and proper safety procedures are followed. Directly responsible for the safety of those under their supervision.
  20. Reviews new product plans and discusses equipment needs and modifications in collaboration with other key people within and outside the plant.

Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:

  • Demonstration of minimum proficiency with the English language in order to ensure effective new hire training and on-going communications about safety and quality issues
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Ability to work weekends as needed
  • Requires one of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in engineering or related field of study and three (3) years of related engineering experience
    • Associate’s degree and nine (9) years of related engineering experience
    • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Business, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering
    • Associate's degree  and  three (3) years of manufacturing related work with demonstrated experience in Continuous Improvement and/or Operational Excellence
  • Experience analyzing production equipment, processes and materials and solving issues
  • Knowledge of various statistical and quality methodologies including but not limited to Statistical Process Control (SPC), Statistical Quality Control (SQC), 5S, 8D, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (R&R), and Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Prior experience working with thermoforming, injection molding, print, and/or paper equipment and processes
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various products
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of products
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Ability to successfully prioritize, and organize projects, deadlines, and tasks with little supervision in both team and independent environments
  • Strong verbal and written skills necessary to communicate intricate job-related information
  • Willingness to work between an office environment, production facility, and/or warehouse depending on the project
  • Willingness to work in or around extreme heat, loud noises, dirt, dust, odors, and fumes 
  • Willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in required area
  • Two (2) years of experience leading team improvement efforts in production facilities
  • Requires understanding of the relationship between improvement activities and performance measures
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead through influence

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Certification in 6-Sigma Black Belt or Lean Master in Manufacturing
  • Experience in Plastics Extrusion, Thermoforming, Injection Molding, Paper Printing and/or Paper Converting processes
