Truck Driver (OTR)

Day-to-Day Role:

  • Responsible for operating a tractor with trailer inter/intrastate to pick up and/or deliver merchandise. 
  • Employee drives diesel/gas tractor in accordance with commercial driving regulations of state department of transportation (DOT), U/S. DOT, and the interstate commerce commission (ICC). 
  • May operate tractor overnight over 500 miles within an 11-hour driving periods. 
  • Driver must be skilled at maneuvering in difficult situations such as narrow passageways and within urban areas. 
  • Driver may hook/unhook trailer as necessary.  Will be required to sleep in “sleeper” tractor.
  • Driver is responsible for conducting a visual inspection of tractor and trailer to include such items as tires, brakes, fluid levels, and latches before and after each operation. 
  • Driver will perform preventative maintenance checks and services of truck and trailer. 
  • Driver will report any malfunctions to truck maintenance supervisor.
  • Responsible for calculating most efficient routes of travel. 
  • Driver will consult bills of lading denoting destinations and road maps to determine most direct and efficient routes of travel. 
  • Driver may request assistance and will make route alterations if appropriate. 
  • Driver will contact supervision and customer/vendor in encountering destination problems.
  • Operate Electronic Log and maintain records, per state and federal standards. 
  • Driver will operate per regulations of local, state, federal, DOT’s and ICC laws as necessary. 
  • Driver will ensure possession of all appropriate documentation, including registration and vehicle inspection reports. 
  • Driver will be required to submit to random drug test as prescribed by DOT regulations.
  • Responsible for unloading delivered merchandise at retail locations. 
  • May assist vendors in loading of merchandise. 
  • Driver unloads trailer of specified merchandise per bills of lading at specified destinations. 
  • Driver will move cartons of merchandise by hand, pallet jack, two-wheeler, etc., and will re-position merchandise not unloaded to ensure against breakage. 
  • Driver may load or assist in loading merchandise picked up at vendors. 
  • May use hand dolly, hand jack, or rollers when moving merchandise to or from trailer. 
  • Responsible for performing duties in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with company policy. 
  • Responsible for other tasks within the employee’s training and skills as directed by the department manager or plant manager.
  • Follow policies and practices of Dart Container Corporation of Kentucky including, but not limited to, the company’s attendance policy. 
  • Able to follow instructions given by supervisor for loading and unloading trucks.

 

Requirements and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess all the following:

  • Class A CDL, required
  • Two (2) years over the road tractor-trailer experience, required
  • 21 years of age
  • Able to operate a commercial motor vehicle interstate
  • Physically and Mentally qualified to drive a commercial vehicle and possess a valid medical certificate as defined in 49 CFR Part 391, required
  • Good Driving Record, required
  • Ability to manually maneuver product at customer locations
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Familiarity with Hours of Service requirements (Part 395 of FMCSR)
  • Sufficient proficiency with the English language in order to:
    • Meet customer service needs
    • Understand highway traffic signs and signals
    • Respond to official inquires
    • Make entries on reports and records
    • Ensure ongoing communications about safety and quality issues
  • HAZMAT training within 90 days of employment by the company
  • Required to maintain good job performance and attendance
  • Two (2) years of commercial driving experience in major cities, preferred
  • Six (6) months pallet jack experience, preferred
