EHS Specialist - Environmental Focus

Dart Container has an immediate opening for an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist to support environmental activities at our Leola and Lancaster manufacturing facilities. This position will support the EHS Manager in the execution and facilitation of all EHS programs at both plants.

Day-to-Day Role: 

  • Understand, participate in, and be fully engaged with the company’s safety program, training, and policies
  • Commit to and follow both Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
  • Be the subject matter expert on environmental compliance for the Leola and Lancaster facilities
  • Perform routine monitoring and inspections of wastewater systems, storage tanks, processes and collection systems, and waste handling locations.
  • Coordinate and/or assist with sampling and testing required to prove compliance with air, waste and waster requirements
  • Regularly verify compliance with all environmental plans, rules, and permits
  • Perform required monthly emission calculations
  • Gather data and assist with preparation and submission of reports required to meet environmental reporting obligations.
  • Maintain and review site environmental plans and update registrations and permits when needed
  • Coordinate all hazardous and non-hazardous waste storage, handling, and disposal, including evaluation of new waste streams
  • Manage and maintain the environmental compliance calendar and ensure all requirements are met on time.
  • Cross train members of the EHS team on environmental compliance to provide backup support
  • Deliver training to site employees on designated EHS topics
  • Assist the EHS manager in development and administration of EHS programs
  • Assist in safety and environmental incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action
  • Conduct inspections and audits, identify opportunities to improve, and make recommendations to improve or eliminate unsafe conditions or practices
  • Track and maintain appropriate documentation and complete reports
  • May be asked to communicate directly with regulatory agencies

Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess all of the following: 

  • BS degree in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or other science field (preferred)
    • OR Associate degree in same fields with two (2) years of related experience
    • OR High school diploma or equivalent with four (4) years of related experience
  • Experience in managing/handling compliance issues, permitting for all media, OSHA/EPA programs, regulatory reviews, permit preparation, reporting and record keeping.
  • Experience in evaluating/interpreting OSHA, EPA, DEP, and DOT regulations and NFPA, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, BOMA and BOCA standards.
  • Experience interfacing with regulatory agencies and external customers, labs, and test companies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated proficiency with the English language
  • Strong math skills and familiarity with unit of measurement conversions
  • Ability to use logic and reason to set up process and systems that assure compliance and improve efficiency
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in coaching conversations and the ability to build consensus among team members
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and duties in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams
