Associate Backup and Recovery Engineer

The Associate Backup and Recovery Engineer is responsible for successful backup and restoration of data assets across the enterprise. This includes meeting all data recovery times and objectives as well as ensuring alignment with the company's Disaster Recovery Plan.

Day-to-Day Role:

  • Implement, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of enterprise backup systems
  • Actively work to develop and maintain expertise on relevant technology products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the backup and storage industries
  • Proactively manage space requirements for backup environments across the company
  • Support the database application level backups and restores of Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Progress databases
  • Support the application level backups and restores of a robust Microsoft Exchange environment 
  • Responsible for the safety of the backed-up data including the servers and backup media 
  • Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly backup reports
  • Produce and maintain written documentation of backup environment
  • Monitor the performance of all backup systems and respond to issues and incidents by troubleshooting to resolve the problem
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform backup system improvements, upgrades, patches, and fixes
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the the backup and recovery responsibilities of the business continuity and Disaster Recovery plans
  • Configure backup servers and hosts to ensure smooth and reliable operation for fulfilling business objectives and processes
  • Ensure established Service Level Agreements are upheld
  • Perform tasks required for IT audits
  • Provide training and relevant document for support personnel including Help Desk, Computer Technicians, Trainers, internal/external customers, and management
  • Adhere to company software licensing policies and practices
  • Ensure confidentiality of sensitive and proprietary information; adhere to company security policies


Core Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:

  • Requires one of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in computer science, information systems, or related field of study, OR
    • High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of related IT work experience within the last five (5) years
  • Experience within the last five (5) years managing backups in a large multi-server environment 
  • One (1) year of experience managing backup software and related infrastructure such as Commvault, NetBackup, Networker, and/or IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
  • One (1) year of experience managing storage technologies such as EMC, IBM, NetApp, or Hitachi
  • Experience configuring and scheduling backup jobs to complete in an allotted time
  • Exposure to virtualization technologies such as Vmware, Hyper-V, or KVM
  • Exposure to Operating Systems such as Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, and IBM AIX
  • Highly self-motivated and directed with proven ability to work alone and collaborate with project teams to meet customer expectations
  • Strong customer service orientation and a strong desire to be a part of a team that contributes to the goals of the company
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary in order to persuade and influence decision making of individuals, groups, or work teams, and to explain difficult technical issues
  • Ability to maintain composure and adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced, customer-focused work environment characterized by rapid change, minimal lead times, and multiple competing priorities
  • Ability to work in a Data Center environment where there is steady air conditioning flow and increased noise levels due to power and cooling equipment
  • Ability to travel up to 25% domestically
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Additional work hours including weekends, holidays, and on-call as required
