Engineering Portfolio Analyst

The Portfolio Analyst conducts detailed portfolio analysis, prepares reports, supports intake for proposed portfolio projects or programs, provides decision recommendations, and implements portfolio process improvements.  This includes researching and analyzing data in support of departments that have input into the portfolio, maintenance and operations knowledge of the process, and financial management.

Day-to-Day Role:
Engineering Portfolio Analyst

  • Collaborate with project managers and project sponsors to maintain information for all projects and programs within the portfolio and determine the project scope and vision
  • Collect and analyze KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) and metrics
  • Develop and run reports, design dashboards and scorecards, and provide analyzed data to appropriate parties 
  • Create resource plans, labor forecasts, and data to support portfolio management decisions
  • Report current or expected financial performance and create financial models to guide decision making
  • Analyze health of projects/programs and present quantitative findings to the Portfolio Manager
  • Interface with appropriate internal and external groups to gather required information for timely analysis of business information and define business, financial, and operations requirements and systems goals.
  • Participate in portfolio management meetings to review portfolio status, new project proposals, and metrics
  • Implement portfolio management process improvements including templates, reporting and analysis, metrics, and capabilities used to rank/assess projects in the portfolio
  • Facilitate portfolio management process training and guidance
  • Research, review, and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing processes and develop strategies for enhancing or further leveraging these processes
  • Perform audits on Project Management Deliverables to provide management with an independent assessment of the progress, quality and attainment of project objectives at defined milestones within the project
  • Develop and utilize standard templates to accurately and concisely write requirements specifications
  • Analyze and verify requirements for completeness, consistency, comprehensibility, feasibility, and conformity to standards

Senior Engineering Portfolio Analyst 

  • Interface with supervisors, managers and directors to maintain portfolio integrity
  • Develop portfolio KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and metrics
  • Review and make recommendations for portfolio structure and portfolio management model
  • Work with Portfolio Manager to provide recommendations to leadership based on analysis of resource plans, timelines and financial performance
  • Work with Engineering Project Leaders to identify and recommend new and/or updates to software tools
  • Create and maintain Roadmap for Portfolio initiatives
  • Analyze health of projects/programs and present findings to the Portfolio Manager
  • Interface with appropriate internal and external groups to gather required information for timely analysis of business information and define business, financial, and operations requirements and systems goals.
  • Participate in portfolio management meetings to review portfolio status, new project proposals, and metrics
  • Implement portfolio management process improvements including templates, reporting and analysis, metrics, and capabilities used to rank/assess projects in the portfolio

  • Mentor and/or assist in the development of less experienced members of Portfolio Management

Core Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:
Engineering Portfolio Analyst

  • Requires one of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in business, finance, engineering or related field of study and five (5) years of professional portfolio management or analytic experience, OR 
    • Associate’s degree with an emphasis in business, finance, engineering or related field of study and seven (7) years of professional portfolio management or analytic experience, OR
    • High school diploma or equivalent and ten (10) years of professional portfolio management or analytic experience
  • Extensive analytical experience including investigating issues, recognizing trends, and recommending solutions to non-routine issues
  • Ability to calculate, analyze, and interpret mathematical and statistical information such as ratios, median, mean, weighted average, etc.
  • Ability to manage multiple high priority efforts/competing priorities and flexibility to adjust to changing requirements, schedules and priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary in order to persuade and influence decision making of individuals, groups, or work teams, and to explain difficult (technical and non-technical) issues
  • Strong relationship management skills
  • Ability to create reports, documents, presentations and spreadsheets
  • Advanced Excel skills to include developing custom pivot tables, building macros and functions such as nested if statements, sum, sumif, count, countif, lookup tables, graphs and charts
  • Ability to successfully prioritize, and organize projects, deadlines, and tasks with little supervision in both team and independent environments 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
