The Director of Internal Audit is responsible for establishing the long-term strategy for the Internal Audit function within Dart Atlas Holdings (DAH) and overseeing the independent reviews and consultations of financial, operational and systems controls completed according to the annual internal audit plan. The Director is a key resource and controls subject matter expert for each division's Executive Leadership Team, senior management and business unit management.
Day-to-Day Role:
- Establish the long-term strategy for the Internal Audit department, including defining the mission and goals for the department
- Organize and direct the Internal Audit department and the work of all internal audit staff and partners in support of the department’s vision, mission and goals, including execution of the annual audit plan
- Based on risk assessments and input from the DAH Board of Directors, senior leadership across the organization (including Dart Container Corp (DCC) and Dart Interests (DI)), and external auditors, prepare the annual audit plan in order to assess and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes
- Evaluate the organization’s system of internal control to ensure that it is functioning as planned and that it is updated as necessary to meet changes in operating conditions
- Identify, analyze and make recommendations regarding key business processes in order to improve overall operational efficiency. Collaborate with financial and operational vice presidents and their directors or managers to develop, implement and oversee standards of internal control and financial accountability
- Prepare and deliver reports to the DAH Board and appropriate members of senior management. These reports will include risk assessments, evaluations of controls, results of projects and the operations of the internal audit department
- Determine that actions planned and taken in response to identified internal control deficiencies are appropriate for the circumstances or initiate further discussions with appropriate management and staff
- Research and promote opportunities to implement data analytics to support the continuous auditing program
- Work with the Legal Department and Human Resources to investigate whistleblower claims and other allegations of misconduct and report the findings to senior management as appropriate
- Ensure audit files include documentation of the audit procedures used and each of the audit reports completed
- Plan, direct, supervise, and coordinate work activities of direct report staff
- Responsible for employee development and coaching, discipline, performance appraisals, and administration of policies
- Make recommendations regarding hiring, terminations, promotions, transfers, and any pay adjustments
- Review staff levels to ensure they are adequate and resources are effectively allocated to meet short-term and long-term objectives
- Adhere to and practice Management Expectations related to the management of self, development of teams, and advancement of the business
Core Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:
- Bachelors degree with an emphasis in accounting, finance, information systems, or other business-related field of study and ten (10) years of experience with at least five (5) years in an internal audit function leadership role (manager or above) or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Certified Internal Auditor certification
- Proven ability to effectively interact with the highest levels of the organization
- Ability to identify issues, compare data, investigate, resolve and communicate findings
- Strong analytical, decision making, and delegation skills with ability to manage change proactively
- Ability to think critically and strategically in order to convey recommendations and results of risk management or internal audit opportunities and analysis
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to persuade and influence decision making of individuals, groups, or work teams, and to explain issues
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels both internally and externally
- Ability to utilize business sense and creativity to develop new ideas and solutions
- Experience using Microsoft Office, including the ability to create reports, documents and presentations in MS PowerPoint and Word and complex spreadsheets in Excel
- Up to 25% domestic and international travel
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport
- Requires a favorable motor vehicle report upon hire
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Previous risk management experience for a global manufacturing company
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- Experience with SAP
